25/09/24 - Morning Shot: Is Swiftopolitics a real thing? To what extent will Taylor Swift’s support win the race for Kamala Harris?Mega popstar Taylor Swift's endorsement of Democratic candidate Kamala Harris has made big waves. While the coveted endorsement may not necessarily change how Americans vote come November 5, the Taylor Swift effect is already showing in voter registration.
In her Instagram post endorsing Kamala Harris, Swift specifically cited misleading images of her supporting Republican candidate Donald Trump as a reason to speak now. One meme, which the former president shared on social media earlier, featured an AI generated image of Swift endorsing him.
Swift’s endorsement of Harris makes her the latest in a long line of American celebrities to dip their toes into the arena of electoral politics. But how much do celebrity endorsements improve electoral prospects?
On this episode of Morning Shot, Joel Penney, Associate Professor, School of Communication and Media, Montclair State University shares his perspectives.
