08/11/24 - Morning Shot [US Election Special]: How will China react to Trump’s Trade War II?China's President Xi Jinping has congratulated Donald Trump on his latest win at the US Presidential Election, and urged both nations to find the "right way to get along", as looming US tariffs threatened to return them to the days of a trade war years ago.
In an interview last month, Trump had said “To me, the most beautiful word in the dictionary is tariff”.
Whether China’s leaders take that threat at face value or as a negotiating tactic is still unclear, with its state media being unusually quiet in the run-up to this US election. However, think tanks in the People’s Republic warn Trump will be far more difficult to negotiate with than during the previous trade war.
On this episode of Morning Shot, Ross Feingold, Research Director at Caerus Consulting, and former Asia Chairman of Republicans Abroad shares his insights.

08/11/24 - Climate Connections: Unlocking Earth's Superhot Geothermal Energy in the Taupō Volcanic ZoneUntil now, geologists have been divided as to whether this superdeep, superhot resource can be tapped.
Rock under high temperature and pressures - more than 373 degrees Celsius and 220 bars of pressure - is ductile, or gooey, as opposed to a smashable stone from your backyard.
So far, data shows that rock that fractures at superhot conditions can be ten times more permeable than rock that fractures at conditions closer to the Earth’s surface, and can also deform more readily.
Scientists have found that in the Taupō Volcanic Zone, supercritical conditions are as shallow as 4 km, making it one of the rare places in the world where supercritical development is both accessible and technically feasible. So far, only Iceland, Japan, the United States and Kenya have successfully drilled superhot wells.
On today’s Climate Connections, Sheena Thomas, Interim General Manager Research Strategy and Partnership from GNS Science shares her insights on the economic potential and viability of superhot geothermal in New Zealand, and why proper environmental impact studies and collaborations with local indigenous Maori communities are absolutely critical in ensuring minimal environmental impact. She’s also a speaker at the Singapore International Energy Week this year.
GNS Science is leading a multi-year research programme 'Geothermal: The Next Generation’ - to investigate New Zealand’s ‘supercritical’ (high temperature/superhot) geothermal conditions and evaluating the economic opportunity for supercritical geothermal heat and electricity generation in New Zealand.

07/11/24 - Morning Shot [US Election Special Part 1]: A new Trump era - America's Choice 2024Four years after leaving the White House, Donald Trump pulled off a dramatic comeback in US political history. He is set to move back in, after millions of Americans voted to give him a second chance.
“America first” was one of Trump’s slogans that really seemed to strike a chord with voters. In his victory speech, Trump pledged to fight for Americans and “with every breath” in his body, as he called this the “golden age of America”.
The republican candidate recaptured the White House with a sweeping victory, with 291 electoral votes, while Democratic Kamala Harris received 223.
Harris has conceded this election and in her speech, she says she “does not concede the fight that fueled this campaign" and that she will remain steadfast in her commitment to fight “for freedom, for opportunity, for fairness and the dignity of all people” in the United States.
On Part One of this two-part special edition of Morning Shot, focusing on the US Presidential Election, Bryan DeAngelis, Partner & Head of Washington Office at Penta Group shares his sights.
