29/11/24 - Climate Connections: Cooking up a storm - How climate change is rewriting the rules of extreme stormsEvery Atlantic hurricane that formed this year had higher wind speeds because of climate change. In fact, scientists found that the extra juice from warmer-than-average ocean temperatures pushed seven storms at least one category higher than they would have been without the influence of climate change.
That’s according to a recent study by researchers from the climate science and communications nonprofit Climate Central, warning of the dangers of intensifying hurricanes in a warmer world.
On this episode of Climate Connections, Professor of Atmospheric Science at the MIT Joint Program on the Science and Policy of Global Change, Kerry Emanuel, who pioneered potential intensity measurements shares his insights on storm strength that he predicted would happen over 30 years ago, and worries that scientists like him have.

28/11/24 - Morning Shot: A buzzing solution - How effective is Project Wolbachia amid climatic changes?By 2026, Wolbachia-carrying mosquitoes released by the National Environment Agency (NEA) will be buzzing through 50 per cent of all households across the island.
That’s part of NEA’s efforts to expand Project Wolbachia, to provide coverage to areas at risk of large dengue outbreaks. Under the project, which was first introduced in 2016, male Aedes aegypti mosquitoes that carry the Wolbachia bacteria are released to mate with the female Aedes mosquitoes. The eggs that are produced do not hatch.
On this episode of Morning Shot, Ng Lee Ching, Group Director of the Environmental Health Institute, NEA shares her insights on how effective the project has been so far, how recent weather changes might affect mosquito breeding cycles, and what the public should look out for.

27/11/24 - Morning Shot: Caregiving Conundrum - Is enough being done to support caregivers as the population greys?By 2030, about one in four citizens in Singapore will be aged 65 and above. The rising burden of caregiving is coming into focus, with the little red dot’s population rapidly ageing.
Just recently, Singapore’s labour movement committed a total of $5.4 million over the next three years to support lower-income union members with caregiving responsibilities at home.
The role of informal caregivers too, is set to become even more critical. According to a recent study by the Centre for Ageing Research and Education, despite the significant time commitment, the monetary value of informal caregiving is often overlooked in eldercare cost estimates, with most studies focusing only on direct healthcare costs.
On this episode of Morning Shot, Associate Professor Rahul Malhotra, Deputy Director of the Centre for Ageing Research and Education at Duke-NUS Medical School shares his insights.
