Sustainable Singapore: How converting Singapore’s chilli crab waste into nitrogen-rich chemicals, benefits both the environment and economy
Every year, globally we waste between 6 to 8 million tonnes of crab, shrimp and lobster shells. So researchers have come up with a solution that benefits both the environment and the economy! They extract chemicals from seafood shell waste which are used in various different sectors. Ning Yan, Associate Professor, Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, NUS shares some of the compounds that can be extracted from seafood waste and what they are used to produce.
