Stocks in Asia started 2023 in a bull market. Investors have been cheered by China’s pivot away from its zero-Covid policy, the ending of its crackdown on tech companies and Beijing’s renewed commitment to growing the world’s second biggest economy. But now it seems like that optimism has already been priced in. In February we saw a reversal of trend in the stock market, leaving us with the question - is the bull market over for Asian stocks? Market View: Has Recent COVID-19 Outbreaks and Inflation Clouded UBS' Outlook?
The Straits Times Index saw its first monthly loss for 2021 in May -- stalling the Singapore benchmark's impressive start to the year, as Singapore introduced its tightest social restrictions since last year's circuit breaker to contain rising COVID-19 infections. Kelvin Tay, Regional CIO for UBS Global Wealth Management, is still positive on both Singapore markets, but does think that vaccination rollouts will be key for investors moving forward.
