Making sense of Indonesia's decision to move capitals
It’s official: Indonesia will be moving its capital out of Jakarta from 2024. The move is expected to cost about US$33B. Meanwhile, Indonesian officials say Jakarta will still remain the commercial and financial centre of the country - even though it’s sinking - and they’ve pledged 40 billion US dollars to save the city. Asia Insider: Japan and South Korea's deepening diplomatic row
A diplomatic row between Japan and South Korea looks to be deepening. South Korea's Trade Ministry urged Japan to accept its request for another round of talks over Tokyo's tighter export controls of three chemicals. Japan’s said this is over “national security concerns”, but did not elaborate.These chemicals are key components of smartphones and other advanced technology, and the row is seen to be threatening global microchip and smartphone display supply chains.
