Morning Shot: Will a law allowing workers the 'right to disconnect' work in Singapore?
Will you respond to your boss after work hours?
Well, we did a social media poll and the majority of those who took part gave a resounding yes! Some of you said “Only for emergencies”. And only a small few said “No”.
Australia is the latest country to pass a new legislation granting a ‘right to disconnect’ outside of work hours. The law doesn't strictly prohibit employers from calling or messaging their workers after hours. However, workers in Australia can ignore emails and phone calls from bosses outside of work hours, unless doing so is deemed “unreasonable”.
So, the big question here is - do such laws work? And can they be effectively implemented in countries like Singapore?
On this episode of Morning Shot, Chong Sin Hui, Assistant Professor from Nanyang Business School, NTU shares her insights.
