Covid-19 impact on Singapore resident income
According to advance estimates released by the Ministry of Manpower, the income of Singaporeans and permanent residents took a hit not felt since 2004 because of the Covid-19 pandemic. How long will softness in the labour market last?
The labour market is starting to bear the brunt of the Covid-19 pandemic - with retrenchments and unemployment numbers climbing. Retrenchment doubled in the last three months and a total of 11,350 people were retrenched in the first half of this year - a sharp rise from earlier estimates released in July. Updates on foreign worker policies in Singapore
Rules regarding the hiring of foreigners are being tightened so that Singaporeans have greater access to the vacancies on offer. The measures include the period of time a job is posted on the MyCareersFuture.sg portal as well as changes to the salary for new Employment Passes for foreign professionals.
